*Caldecott Honor 1987 Rumpelstitskin by The Brothers Grimm, retold by Alison Sage. Paintings by Gennady Spirin.
Dial, 1990. Spirin's paintings are a highlight of this version, reminescent of Northern Renaissance paintings, especially Brueghel. Interestingly it is the miller's wife who instigates the miller's visit and boast to the king. In another twist, it is the king who overhears Rumpelstiltskin singing his name song, thereby rescuing his child. Rumpelstiltskin's Daughter by Diane Stanley. Morrow Junior Books, 1997.
Have you ever wondered why the miller's daughter would have wanted to marry the king who demanded so much of her? Didn't he only want her for her gold? A fun twist on the tale with a clever, resourceful heroine who turns the kingdom around -- for the better. |
